Who We Are

Gaia Greenenergy is supported by global ESG investors and currently has the largest single concession for renewable energy development in Sri Lanka comprising of a 500 MWp rooftop solar programme. We aim to become the leading developer in this growing sector. We are an audacious and an ambitious company that is dedicated to and confident of achieving our goals and staying true to our purpose.

Our Ethos <br/> An Altruistic and Benevolent Approach

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, making Sri Lanka more energy independent by accelerating its transformation to renewable energy. In order to do this and address climate change as a nation, we need to forge new pathways and innovate. The private and public sector need to work closely together in order to effectively address these challenges.

There are numerous advantages in scaling up rooftop solar projects firstly, given its distributed nature improves the efficiency of transmission systems and reduces transmission loss saving millions. It stabilizes the grid and reduces the reliance on centralized power sources and transmission systems to increasing grid reliability.

The global energy crisis has lead many nations to accelerate their move to renewable energy whilst developing novel storage technologies

Join us in Transforming the Future

Sri Lanka’s main power utility, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) buys and sells power whilst managing its distribution and transmission, serving a population of 21.4 million people and a land area of 65,610 square kilometers.

According to the CEB, Sri Lanka’s power consumption is expected to grow at 6% per annum between 2015 and 2034, with peak demand expected to climb at over 3%. The electricity sector currently relies mainly on large-scale hydro and thermal power generation and Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) that comprises of a fraction of total generation.

In 2016, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Power Energy, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and the CEB launched the Soorya Bala Sangramaya Programme (Battle for Solar Energy), a solar PV rooftop incentive scheme with a target to install 1,000 MWp by 2025. Currently, it has installed 580 MWp of capacity, yielding nearly 800 GWh (5% of total generation). Under the NET PLUS PLUS scheme, the Sri Lankan government together with the CEB provides incentives to investors and developers by purchasing electricity generated by solar PV rooftop systems.

The reliance on fossil fuels poses a greater challenge to Sri Lanka given the ongoing economic crisis and volatile global commodity markets. The current strategy of the government is to maximize power generation from renewable sources and thereby generate 70% of its electricity from low carbon sources by 2030, in which over half of that are to be met by renewable sources.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

The links between greenhouse gas emissions and climate change are too evident and extreme to ignore. Average global temperatures are increasing, extreme weather events are becoming more severe, ocean levels are rising and acidificationis occurring. All of these ecological threats are a result of human activity. By lowering our carbon footprint, we can together help contribute to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In our fight against climate change, we are educating the communities and our stakeholders on the importance of making small adjustments that would lead to achieving big results.
